When the Underside of a Deck Becomes the Best Room

The back of this Millstone Township home steps down through multiple grade changes into a wooded lot. Absolute Decks built a two-tier Trex deck so the upper level serves as a balcony off the house, and the lower level becomes a dry, covered patio.

What Made This More Than a Standard Two-Tier Build

  • Two waterproofed levels, not one. Most under-deck drainage only protects the space directly below the top deck. Here, both tiers needed full dryspace coverage so the lower patio stays dry in heavy rain.
  • Arches as structure, not trim. The custom arches carry the visual load between the columns and tie the underside of the upper deck into something that reads as part of the house.
  • Fiberglass round posts in a shaded lot. Wood swells and rots in damp, tree-covered conditions. Fiberglass takes paint cleanly, holds detail at the capital and base, and won’t move on a humid site.

What Got Built

Rob and his son Dylan planned column placement, arch radius, and drainage runs before any framing went in:

  • Tiki Torch surface with Vintage Lantern railing on both tiers. The dark rail stands cleanly against the cream siding.
  • Custom arches between every column. Each arch is built into the rim of the upper-deck framing, so the lower level reads as a colonnade rather than a row of bare posts.
  • White beadboard ceiling under the upper deck. Reflects light back into the covered patio so the lower area never feels like the underside of a structure.
  • Side staircase connecting the levels. Tiki Torch treads, Vintage Lantern risers, and matching railing.

A Matching Pavilion Across the Yard

The property also has a freestanding pavilion near the pool, finished with the same white columns and shingled hip roof as the deck. The two structures share one visual language across the yard.

Lessons Worth Stealing for Your Own Build

On a tall deck, the underside is part of the design. Hide it behind plain posts and exposed framing, and the yard reads as half-finished; trim it out with arches, columns, and a finished ceiling, and the lower level becomes its own room.

Material choice matters more under shade. Wood posts, square headers, and unfinished joists in a damp wooded lot will warp, stain, and need repainting within a few years. Fiberglass posts and a sealed beadboard ceiling shrug off the same conditions and hold their finish.
